The recession that began in 2008 took a toll on
Milwaukee businesses. But as some restaurants and shops closed, new ones
emerged to fill the gap. Through it all, Milwaukeeans never stood still.
The theme of the Shepherd
Express’ 2011 City Guide, “What’s New in Milwaukee,” honors the resilience
and resourcefulness of local entrepreneurs. Defying the economic downturn,
Milwaukeeans launched cafes, boutiques and performing arts groups. Our city’s
cultural life remains vibrant as we enter the second decade of the new century.
Along with a description of some of the new venues
that have sprung up in the Milwaukee area during the past 15 months, this
year’s City Guide includes expanded versions of such popular features as the
Festival Guide, a listing of events through the end of the year, and the Dining
Guide, which provides a critical assessment of Milwaukee’s finest restaurants.
Milwaukee remains a treasure among American cities.
The City Guide is our tribute to many of the things that make Milwaukee a great
place to live.
