The Music Counts program is a new after school music program for early elementary students that will provide a comprehensive curriculum of general music instruction once per week. The program was developed in response to the recent dramatic cuts in music education funding in the Milwaukee Public School (MPS) district, leaving many children without access to regular music education through their elementary school. The program's core curriculum is comprised of two classes: Foundations of Music - Each week students will engage in fun, hands-on music making where they will learn to play together, read notes and rhythms, understand music terminology, and improvise their own melodies and rhythms. Developing Voice - This class will train the ear and the voice through fun, age-appropriate instruction in a choral setting. Students may also sign-up for one of two add-on classes: Make Music with Me Hand Drumming Music Counts for Fall 2011 will start with two levels serving K5 through 3rd grade, and students will be placed in the correct level following an assessment on the first day of class. The semester runs for 12 weeks and enrollment is not restricted to MPS students. Classes will be held at Elm Creative Arts School, 900 W. Walnut Street in Milwaukee on Tuesday afternoons
