A visit to Jake's
Deli (1634 W. North Ave.)
is like stepping back to the 1920s. Ceiling fans, old cramped wooden booths and
vintage light fixtures with hints of Art Deco add to the aura. Behind the
counter the employees are hard at work making their classic sandwiches. The
menu is small, but the sandwiches are made to order, with variations of corned
beef and turkey pastrami. The reuben is also popular, adding cheese and plenty
of sauerkraut to the mix. Sides are few, but include potato salads and soups
such as matzo ball and cabbage borscht. Though the neighborhood has changed
dramatically over the decades, Jake's still remains popular with the locals.
