In the Milwaukee Public Market adjacent to the St. Paul Fish Co.'s display cases filled with
fresh fish is a stainless steel counter with 11 seats. A chalkboard
sign identifies it as Karen Jean's Oyster Bar and Grill. Behind the
counter, a case holds the daily selection of oysters chilled on ice.
Oysters are sold by the piece. A recent visit found four types priced
from $1 to $2. Available were Virginian blue points, Louisianan gold
bands, malpeques from Prince Edward Island and kumamotos from
Washington. Though the last two are the smallest, they are the best and
the priciest. Grated horseradish is provided, as well as an assortment
of bottled hot sauces. With food this tasty, who needs atmosphere and a
linen tablecloth?
