Old World Third Street is a prime destination for tourists visiting Milwaukee. Its few blocks are filled with bars, restaurants and specialty food shops such as Usinger's, whose deli is filled with German meats and sausages. If you would like a beer to go with those sausages, proceed across the street to Mader's Restaurant, a Milwaukee institution since 1902.
The menu stays true to its Germanic origins,
however, lightened up with a few seafood entrees and one vegetarian option. Perhaps it is safer to rely on Mader's past and order one of the "German Specialties." What could be more classic than the Wiener schnitzel ($25.95), a thin slice of pounded tender veal with just the correct coating of breadcrumbs? Make use of the slice of lemon. Just hope that the spaetzel are not overcooked and dry, and that the sauerkraut with smoked meat has been properly drained of its salty brine. In spite of the occasional lapse in the kitchen,
Mader's is worth experiencing for the setting and good service, and nobody makes a better salt roll with caraway seeds than this place. The bar may be the nicest place to drink a German beer in Milwaukee.
