Ordering sushi or sashimi a la carte can be an expensive undertaking, yet it's also the only way to experience the more exotic types of raw fish. One option is to visit a restaurant during its lunchtime hours and order a combination plate. One place that offers a great value is Kyoto, located in an unassuming strip mall. The sashimi lunch, 12 pieces of the chef's choice, goes for $9.95. The tuna has improved in recent months, thanks to more-frequent shipments. A recent selection also found salmon, red snapper and a slice of giant clam. The real treat was a halved raw shrimp coated in smelt roe. This delightful option should be added to Kyoto's regular menu.
