Many Milwaukeeans claim Polish ancestry, yet Polish restaurants remain scarce. The best of this rare lot would have to be the Polonez. Once located across the street from St. Josaphat's Basilica, the restaurant moved to St. Francis a few years ago. The bar is elegant, but most of the older patrons head straight for the dining room. Expect to find traditional Polish fare such as meatloaf, stuffed cabbage, sausage and pierogies. This is not the place for those on a diet! If mushroom soup is available, order it. It's the best mushroom soup in the area. In fact, all of the soups are tasty. Prices for food
are quite reasonable. While the wine list isn't extensive, the beer
selection is exceptional. In Poland, it is unusual for a restaurant to
serve more than three or four varieties of beer, but there are more
than 20 at Polonez, including Okocim, Zywiec, Hevelius, Jurand and even
a Polish version of an Irish stout.
