Izumi's has become a mainstay for Japanese dining in Milwaukee since opening 15 years ago. It was one of the first places in town to offer a sushi bar, a departure from the Benihana-style dining that passed for Japanese back then. Earlier this century Izumi's moved a short distance to new, roomier quarters in a classic Art Deco structure, one of the finest in this city. Now the sushi bar is much larger and another bar near the entrance offers a sake menu and Japanese-inspired martinis. The main dining room is understated and simple with wood partitions and a smooth concrete floor colored deep gray. Another room, separated by rice paper panels, offers a traditional dining table- no chairs and no shoes, please.
