Phan's Garden

288 Of the many Southeast Asian restaurants on National Avenue, Phan´s Garden is the oldest. The menu has a split personality half Chinese and half Vietnamese. The Vietnamese is the reason to visit. Many customers can be seen eating bowls of noodles with broth. Pho cac biet is a typical selection featuring beef and rice noodles. The Vietnamese offerings are many with fine egg rolls, steamed rolls with pork, papaya salad and curries with lemongrass. The décor may be dated, but low prices and the great variety on the menu more than compensate.

Although the food is why we used to eat at this place, my family and friends have been disappointed with the arrogant, rude and unbearably slow service. We ate there recently with my friend and our 4 year old daughters. After waiting at least 35 minutes, I asked for a bowl of rice. The server acted like I insulted him and he kept saying that the food was coming. When I asked him for the 2nd time for the rice for the kids (since they were starving!) and that their service was slow, he told me that that is how his restaurant does things and takes care of their food. We only ordered two bowls of noodle soup, and two appetizers. They all came out at the same time after about 40 minutes. I felt discriminated as a mother and a woman. Did they never serve families before? Why did he act so rudely to us? In hindsight, I really wish I had left without eating. That lunch atmosphere was so unpleasant after this annoying argument, and I strongly urge readers to think twice about eating at Phan's Garden.
