Since 1979, this diner/deli/grocery has catered to the health-conscious. While much of the menu focuses on vegetarian and vegan options, a few lighter meats like poultry, shrimp and salmon also make appearances. There are usually two daily soup choices as well as vegetarian chili, which is deftly spiced with cumin, an ideal balance between fiery and mild. The absence of meat is not even noticed.
Beans & Barley also has a few other surprising amenities. There is a bar and wine list, mainly domestic with a few organic varietals. Consider this place for dessert with its unusually lengthy list of pies, cheesecakes and tortes, and don't forget about the surprisingly hearty breakfasts.
