We are two students currently attending University of Wisconsin %u2013 Milwaukee who are raising public awareness of the social and educational situations in Cambodia following the Auto-Genocidal Holocaust of 1979. We will be embarking on academically endorsed, humanitarian inspired trip this summer to help ameliorate some of the social and economic issues that plague their society today. We will be volunteering our time specifically to help the younger demographic, ages 21 and younger, which comprises 50% of the total population of Cambodia. About 500,000 of children from 6-11 have no access to education. One out of three Cambodians live on less than 2000 riels (US $0.50) a day. Like any lesser developed country the level of education attainable for its citizens correlates directly with its problems of poverty. We will be working with Angkor Childrenīs Hospital along with Savongīs School which are both located in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Savongīs School, an institution organized and run by foreign teachers and supported nearly entirely by donations, has been working with the UN since 2005 to bring to these students a quality education even if they cannot pay tuition. We will be volunteering there helping the children assimilate to the English language and culture. These non-profit organizations such as Angkor Childrenīs Hospital as well as Savongīs School could not exist without public support from sympathetic individuals and philanthropic organizations. In Angkor Childrenīs Hospital specifically there are a mere 30 Cambodian doctors to serve every 100,000 people. Per capita health expenditure is low, with the majority of funding coming from foreign sources. We are excited and overjoyed to be aiding and fostering the development of youth both mentally in the classroom and physically in the hospital during our time abroad. However, these UN affiliated non-profit organizations needs extend beyond our humanitarian grasp of curriculum, instruction, and Hippocratic assistance. For this reason we are hosting the Confidence for Cambodia benefit concert with all proceeds going to support these hermeneutic organizations. This unique event will be hosted Sunday, June 22nd at the Wicked Hop / Jackelope Lounj. A mere $5 donation gets you through the doors which will be open from 8pm-2am. The music kicks off at 8:30 featuring Black Dog and Defyne Normal. Throughout the night we will be selling $5 raffle tickets and chances to win a variety of prizes such as Summerfest tickets, gift certificates generously donated by local restaurants and boutiques in Milwaukee. We'd like to bring Cambodia as close to Milwaukee as possible, and many of our friends and acquaintances while sympathetic to our cause, to our journey, to them Cambodia is still an abstract term. We want to make this as real as possible and what better way than connecting directly to a school we will be volunteering in. Publicity is vital to the viability both of this event as well as the exigencies of these organizations abroad. In order to maximize the magnitude of potential publicity for this event, we would like to encourage your involvement in the rehabilitation of Cambodiaīs socio-political identity and eminence nearly extinguished in 1979.
