Two programs on recent developments in Cuba will take place in Milwaukee on Thursday and Friday, June 5th & 6th, featuring Professor Isaac Saney, a Caribbean-born expert on Cuba's political system and race relations in Cuba who just returned from a trip to Cuba. He is also the author of the widely acclaimed book, "Cuba: A Revolution in Motion," and co-produced a film on Cuba's role in defeating racist rule in Southern Africa which will be shown on Friday June 6th at 6:00pm, following a 5:30 reception and book signing at the Milwaukee Enterprise Center at 2821 N. 4th St. This program will focus on Cuba's role in the Third World, including over 20,000 doctors serving abroad, and its programs providing literacy and free medical education to students from over 25 countries in Africa and Latin America. Professor Saney will also speak on general Cuban-related developments on Thursday, June 5th at 7pm at UWM's Curtin Hall Room 175, 3243 N. Downer Avenue, just north of Kenwood Blvd. The programs are free and open to the public, but donations will be accepted to assist two civil rights activists from Milwaukee's African-American community who are participating in the 19th Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba this July. They will help deliver humanitarian supplies to Cuban churches, in an act of civil disobedience to challenge the U.S. embargo. A send-off celebration and potluck dinner for the activists will take place on Saturday, June 21, at 6:30pm, at Central United Methodist Church, 639 N. 25th St. (25th & Wisconsin Ave.) Humanitarian donations are being accepted at the Church (344-1600) through the morning of June 21, and can include medicines that expire after 2/1/09, wheelchairs, crutches, medical supplies, bibles in Spanish, school supplies, current computers, and more. See www.ifconews.org for a full list. Sponsors include UWM's Latin America Solidarity Committee, Progressive Students of Milwaukee, and the Wisconsin Coalition to Normalize Relations with Cuba.
