Protecting a New Generation

In Section: Kultur Milwaukee Posted By: Stephanie Felchner

Two students from South Milwaukee High School will have to deal with the implications of a decision that has changed their lives in a major way. A 18 year old man had sex with two students while failing to tell them that he is HIV positive. Police are currently looking for the suspect.

HIV infections have been on the rise the past few years in Wisconsin. Numerous new cases are involving young adults, a “new generation” facing HIV and AIDS. Some speculate that the rise is due to a lack of concern and false information regarding the deadly retrovirus. Some startling facts about the disease include:

I remember hearing only briefly about HIV/AIDS in my high school health courses, nowhere near the amount that we should have been informed. Most of my knowledge about the disease is due to my college bio course. I’m against abstinence-only sex education, because it’s the kind of ignorance that simply and sadly breads ignorance.

South Milwaukee High School isn’t providing HIV testing or health counselors; however, there are plenty of clinics in Milwaukee that offer services including:

Keenan Central Health Clinic
3200 North 36th Street

and

Southside Health Center

Kind of makes you wonder just how many people have contracted the virus without their knowledge.. either because the infected person isn't aware that they have it, or just don't tell the other. I don't think it would be irrational for HIV screenings to become standard with physicals.

Morals among all of the involved parties would've prevented contracting it in the first place. Harsh reality.

Good blog. You're right about the false information and consequences of inadequate sex-ed. I've known several people, male and female, who did not think it possible to contract and STI from oral sex.
