Fagbug was on the UW-Milwaukee campus yesterday and the owner, Erin Davies, will give another speech tonight at 7 p.m. in Sandburg Hall.
What is Fagbug? A VW beetle that was spray painted with the phrases "fag" and "u r gay" all because the owner had a rainbow sticker on it. Erin Davies' car was tagged last year on National Day of Silence, a day for bringing attention to LGBT harrasment, and now she's using it as an example and speaking out. Davies is driving her car around the country for 58 days while stopping at campuses to discuss her ordeal and her mission, all while creating a documentary about her experiences. The film is set to be realsed summer/fall of 2008.
Hate crimes and homophobia sadly do exisit in our society, whether or not it is actively in the open. Although there are people who choose to hate, some are given the chance to make an example of their actions and use them to their advantage. I certainly admire Erin Davies' courage and mission.
This year the National Day of Silence is April 25th. It is held in memory of Lawrence King, the 15 year old boy shot and killed by a classmate because of his sexual orientation.
