City says crime down, but violent crime up - uh, what now?

In Section: General Posted By: Jan

I'm not buying what the city is selling on this report.

So, if you listen to city officials they say that property crime is down, but arson (up 8%) and violent crime (murder, rape, robbery, assault) is up 1%.  What gives?

They are waiting for the FBI to certify the results, but what the hell does this mean? So now, as a society, it's okay to say crime is down even when it's not really in the scary crime that keeps tourists away?  C'mon...be serious.

Here are the stats I've seen:

The city had 105 homicides in 2007, more than in 2006.

Aggravated assaults increased 5.3%, from 3,974 to 4,183.

Rapes totaled 235 last year, one less than in 2006.

Burglaries increased 7.1%, from 5,787 to 6,197.

Larceny-thefts decreased 2.9%, from 24,921 to 24,203.

If you are a business owner that relies on tourists we should all be crying for a stop to this trend toward violence in our city. And, I'm not saying the cops are to blame.

You think you can change reporting methodologies and nobody will notice? How stupid do they think we are.
