Discovering Found

Since I am a car-less, college student I quite often walk places and ride the Milwaukee County buses. It's usually in these two instances I encounter on a regular basis interesting strangers. I sometimes wonder about their life, what's important to them, where they live, etc. You can get an overall glimpse of someone by what they're wearing, how they speak, how they act, but what do you really know about the person sitting next to you on the bus, or anywhere for that matter?

My creative writing professor introduced me to an interesting magazine titled FOUND. It highlights the seemingly small artifacts people summit from all over the country, notes, letters, postcards, photos, anything people find that gives a glimpse into someone else's life. For Example: Beautiful.

This website has tons of interesting "Finds." I've been looking at a bunch of them and all of the comments under them, where people try to analyze the note or piece and attempt to figure out the writer's situation or some aspect of their life. Here's one from Wisconsin:

Dad.

I've never found any quite as intresting as the ones on the website. However, a man sitting next to me on the bus this past summer pulled out his notebook of poems and writings, which were really well written, and very personal and asked me to read some. I was curious as to why he would let me in on the personal aspects of his life given I knew him for only 10 minutes. None-the-less it was an interesting way to pass the time while riding the 15.

A few months ago while visiting my parents I came across an artifact of my own. A note I had written for the tooth fairy:

It's so interesting to find these either written by strangers or yourself years ago. Have you ever FOUND anything that caught your eye and made you wonder?

I once found a greasy ear of corn in a dumpster behind the county jail. This at a time when I had forsworn meat products and was unemployed. Despite my overwhelming hunger, I left it lay there undisturbed.

Found is AWESOME! I actually subscribed for a while a couple years ago. The "Find of the Day" online is almost always highly entertaining.
