I can't believe the entire state of Wisconsin is still questioning whether or not to enact a full smoking ban. There are plenty of states and cities around the country that have already taken the step. The first U.S. city to enact a full smoking-ban was a California city back in 1990. Other countries around the world are taking notice. The entire nation of the United Kingdom went smoke-free just last summer. Articles show that it helped decline numerous medical complications and It even caused their cigarette sales to drop.
Yesterday Lance Armstrong was out with Governor Doyle promoting the ban in Madison and at a press conference here in Milwaukee. The main argument surrounding the ban is that the Wisconsin Tavern Leauge believes the ban will hurt their business. Not so according to A new report put out by WISPIRG.
I know this issue brings up some heavy opinions and beliefs, but honestly I think our city and our entire state need to make the decision to promote the health of employees that work in these bars and resturants and everyone else who goes there to enjoy themselves without the health risks of second hand smoke and all the unpleastness of reeking like carcinogens. Smokers can smoke all they want, that's their choice, but it's quite unfair to do it indoors.
I shouldn't have to decide where I go to have a nice time, I shouldn't have to suffer from my asthma when going out to the bars, I simply cannot stand the ignorance of the tobacco industry, the tavern league, and smoker's who decide to risk other people's health for their own disgusing habbit. I'm putting all my hope in January of 2009.
