It all began with corsets and eventually shifted to diet pills, breast implants, the "herion chic" look, and numerous other dangerous ways for women to perceive themselves. The average American woman is 5'4 and weighs 140 lbs. Why is it that (besides the new Dove campaign) I have yet to see an advertisment that includes an average American woman? In the 1960's model Twiggy (pictured) glamourized the thin look with her 5'6 frame weighing a mere 90 lbs. Today many models are at least 5'11 and weigh somewhere between 107-110 lbs.
It's become an unrealistic model for my generation to be bombarded with, not to mention dangerous. I'd be lying if I said I'd never felt pressure to be thin and although I have a healthy view and lifestyle, I know some of my peers struggle far more and have personal battles with their wieght and image.
This week is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. Currently 5 million Americans suffer from an eating disorder with 4 million of them being women. It's a physical and psychological disorder that can be prevented and treated.
This thursday night at Marquette University there will be a free performance of the musical NORMAL at 7 p.m. The musical showcases a family struggling with their daughter's eating disorder. It's a new way to look at a serious issue and shed some light on ways of treating this disease.
