Chicago: Friend or Foe?

It's only about an hour and a half drive from here, but Chicago tends to stir up some animosity for some of my fellow Milwaukee natives. I must admit that sports, although I like to play, I could care less about watching games. Up until a few years ago I thought the yellow line making random appearances during football games was painted on the field (sad but true). My brother and Step-dad have not gotten over this.

However, I do know that there's been some kind of rivalry between the Cubs and Brewers, and the Bears and Packers, correct? But it doesn't end there we also may criticize our neighbors to the south about driving styles and supposed accents.

Personally, I think we're lucky to live in a semi-large city and still be within reach a major U.S. city that allows us to escape for a mini-vacation and a change of scenery.

I found this article: Truth or Dairy? that appered last summer as the cover story in Time Out Chicago, highlighting all the wonderful things about Milwaukee and all of things Chicago natives can look forward doing in Milwaukee. Perhaps this is Chicago's way of trying to bury the hachet. Here's a site I found that highlights all that Chicago has to offer.

Maybe we should call a truce. Both cities are central to the Midwest and perhaps our feuding could simply be chalked up as a type of sibling rivarly. We love to hate each other.

What do you love or hate about Chicago?

Milwaukee is the 22nd largest city in the country. Oh Keribus, check your facts son.
You're right - 22nd in pop, but still 34 as a market for ad spending. Either way, there's no good way to compare these two cities.

Milwaukee is the Hampton's of Chicago. Okkayyyyy.

Size Matters! Chicago is also the 3rd largest city in the country! We;'re 34th. So, a lot of this has to do with size people. As far as comparing the two cities - Chicago doesn't even think of us as "little bro." XRT radio in Chicago ran a billboard campaign: "What would Chicago be without XRT? Milwaukee" Enough said.

I think that Chicago is very similar to Milwaukee and the things that people hate about either can be found in both cities. On the whole, Chicago has a more extensive public transportation system, however, expensive cross-town cabrides are sometimes necessary and always maddening. We both have Lake Michigan. An art museum. Pro teams in all sports. So there are many similarities, but the biggest difference in my opinion, and the only reason I'd choose Chicago over Milwaukee, is the abundance of quality music venues that Chicago has to offer. The Pabst, Turner and Riverside are all nice and bring top-notch acts in to town routinely, but Chicago has the types of venues (of all sizes) to ensure that no notable act will ever bypass the city on their tour schedule. Milwaukee unfortunately gets skipped which causes me to travel to Chicago. Also, at a football game at Soldier Field several years back i was pelted with a hunk of cheese as I stood to celebrate a packers touchdown, but I cannot hold one drunken person's actions against an entire city. Come to think of it, I doubt said person was drunk because the cheese hit me squarely in the back of the head which would be tough to do if one were drinking heavily.
