I was 13 when the Columbine High School Massacre occured. I remember the news stations were flooded with accounts of the killings, the heartbreak, and possible warning signs. I was too young to fully comprehend the severity of the situation. I was more concerned with writing notes to my friends that night and picking out my outfit for the next day. Looking back I wasn't much younger than the two killers who were 17 and 18 at the time.
Each day I walk down the halls of UWM, enter lecture halls and take a seat with no hesitation. Eight years after Columbine and school shootings are still flooding their way into news stations across the country. It is a horrible reality, one I still don't fully comprehend.
I wonder if there is any solution to the problem, what could we do as a society, is there anything we could do?
Gun control and therapy are two solutions we tend to evaluate, but the severity leads me to believe it's much more than that. The geographical closeness of the NIU shooting was a wake up call aimed directly at me, it is also where one of my cousins attends law school. I realize this can happen anywhere, to anyone, but how can we prevent this? What are your thoughts?
My heavy heart goes out to all those affected.
