Sure Milwaukee's popular mayor Tom Barrett withered a beating with a tire iron after valiantly responding to a grandmother's cries for help, but apparently it takes more than that to top former "American Idol" contestant Danny Gokey in the hearts of Milwaukeeans. Danny Gokey bested both Barrett and the late, great Les Paul in the Shepherd Express' annual reader-selected Best of Milwaukee awards, announced last night at a ceremony at the InterContinental Hotel.

Gokey also topped the Male Vocalist category, in a match-up that wasn't even fair to the runners-up—singers Willy Porter and Jayk didn't have the benefit of being on America's top-rated televisision show. And besides, if losing teeth and permanently damaging your hand in a heroic effort to protect a grandmother or inventing the electric guitar as we know it isn't enough to best Gokey, singing pretty songs at local clubs isn't going to do it, either. I was a little surprised Gokey didn't sweep the Most Trusted Public Official, Local Activist, Divorce Lawyer and Japanese Restaurant categories as well.

The full list of Best of Milwaukee winners will run in Wednesday's issue of the Shepherd.

This is appalling. Danny Gokey sang other people's songs on TV. That's it. Les Paul invented the electric guitar and multi-track recording. Say what you will about Mayor Barrett, but at least he's working for the city. Gokey didn't achieve lasting fame or impact in his chosen career, nor has he worked to serve Milwaukee. He seems like a nice enough guy with a decent set of pipes, but nobody would care at all if he hadn't been on tha tee vee.

I worked with Danny Gokey at Journey house a few years ago and that guy was the best mentor/friend for the kids we ever had so don't go saying he never did anything for Milwaukee cuz when was the last time you volunteered your time for anything? Personally I think it's cool for Milwaukee to have a guy like D out there representing us and my wife and kids all enjoy listinning to him sing.

Danny Gokey cut me off in traffic once on Lincoln, then flipped off an old lady who was trying to cross the street. All right, maybe it wasn't him, but it looked like him, and the car in which he was careening wildly down the road had plates which said RIM JOB, a double entendre which I must admit was pretty clever. So I'll give points to the Gokey Doppleganger of the Near South Side, but would I buy this record? No.

Danny Gokey brought national attention to the City of Milwaukee. I know a number of people who traveled to Milwaukee, including me and my husband, to attend TWO of Danny's concerts and other events. While in Milwaukee I stayed for 4 nights at one of it's hotels, ate at a number of restaurants, bought concert tickets, bought Brewers tickets, shopped, etc.... My visit may seem insignificant, but added together with others who visited Milwaukee (including the people from American Idol and Fox) for the sole purpose of seeing Danny Gokey, the amount of money spent in the city was probably significant. Milwaukee, like any other American city is appreciative when visitors spend money. Commerce is important to any city, especially in this difficult economy. I never heard of your Mayor until he was hit over the head while helping a grandmother. Not sure how his contribution to the City was particularly different this year than any other year (although I am not from Milwaukee and perhaps he did have a banner year). Les Paul may have been very deserving of recognition, but again, this award is given on a yearly basis and I'm not sure his contribution to the City of Milwaukee was especially significant THIS YEAR over any other year. Danny Gokey not only brought national recognition to the City of Milwaukee, he chose to start and maintain a charitable foundation that will have an impact on the people of Milwaukee for years to come. He could have located his foundation anywhere in the country (perhaps in Los Angeles or Nashville where he also has ties), but he chose Milwaukee as it's headquarters because he is committed to the city and to helping children and families living in Milwaukee. Kudos to him. Congrats Danny on a well deserved award.
