It's Time to Do the Right Thing: Enact a Smoking Ban

Legislators have the opportunity to do the right thing this week by voting to ban smoking in Wisconsin. The state Senate held a hearing today and the state Assembly is holding a hearing tomorrow. Both houses could vote on legislation quickly and send a bill to Gov. Doyle as early as next Wednesday.

State Rep. Jon Richards (D-Milwaukee), the author of the Assembly bill, told me the statewide, comprehensive smoking ban could be phased in over the course of three months. The ban as currently envisioned would still allow for a few exemptions, such as smoking rooms in hotels, assisted living facilities, cigar bars and tobacco shops. The ban is also included in Doyles proposed budget.

All I can say is hallelujah! Although I respect smokers rightsheck, I smoked for 16 years and enjoyed it up to the day that I quitits long past time for Wisconsin to enact this ban. Bans in a patchwork of cities and counties doesnt work and simply causes more conflict between smokers and nonsmokers. Trying to distinguish between bars-that-serve-food and restaurants-that-serve-alcohol isnt fair, either. But a comprehensive ban that still allows for some safe smoking havens is the fairest thing I can think of.

Ive heard most if not of all of the arguments on both sides of this issue. Many are compelling. But my personal experience with a smoking ban is what made me a believer. I lived in NYC when Mayor Bloomberg enacted the ban. I thought it was a horrible idea even though Id quit smoking by then. I mean, why live in New York if you cant do as you please? Why scrub the city so clean that you couldnt recognize it anymore?

Then the ban kicked in and I loved it. I went to bars more frequently, and I stayed longer. My friends smoked less and felt better in the morning. Bars and restaurants provided smoking areas outdoors, either in a patio or on the sidewalk. Those places became great areas to hook up with other smokersand by hook up I mean hook up. So the ban wasnt the worst thing in the world.

So, Wisconsin, its time! A statewide, comprehensive smoking ban is our best option.

I'm not a smoker. I believe it's time - the time is right - for the government to BUTT OUT of our lives. If we don't want to smoke, we won't. If someone's smoking offends us, we'll settle it amongst ourselves. Leave us some tiny shred please of our inalienable rights unregulated by legislators and litigators. Remember liberty? Remember the pursuit of happiness?

It's definitely time for a ban. For the health of the workers: bartenders, servers, bands, etc that have very few options these days to earn a decent pay. They shouldn't have to worry about getting cancer from a job.

First, they came for cigarettes, and I did not speak up, as I didn't smoke. Then they came for alcohol, and I lost 40 pounds in 2 months. This won't stop until we are required to wear protective helmets walking down the sidewalk and the only shows on our Telescreen will be on PBS, broadcast in Newspeak. I love Big Brother.

No one is forcing non-smokers to enter establishments that allow smoking. Non-smokers aren't the victims here. They knowingly go to establishments that allow smoking and put themselves in 'harms' way. If they feel strong enough about this issue, then DON’T GO to places where smoking is allowed. A business owner should be given the autonomy to select. The business owner can deal with loss of revenue due to non-smokers boycotting. Also this will prevent business owners from asking for more tax dollars to subsidize their businesses due to loss of non smoker business in the future. We as a country, we have to get out of this cycle of government regulation and help ourselves. Let’s make our own RESPONSIBLE decisions and then deal with the consequences. Regulation only leads to more regulations which leads to more taxes. History is the greatest teacher of all.

I experience elevated stress when people swear around me, so I'm hoping after this ban we can look into banning all "negative" language. We need the government to do these things. Its for our own good.

The problem with a smoking ban, besides the expansion of the ever-growing powers of government, is the fact that our taxes will be increased if we lose the cigarette tax revenue currently generated by cigarette companies.
