Did Phish Narc Out Their Phans?

Headlines about Phish's reunion concerts this weekend in the Hamptons have been overshadowed in the last 24 hours by news about drug busts at the concert: Over $1.2 million in drugs were confiscated which is... a lot.

There's an angle to the story that isn't getting much play right now. Much of the police presence at these shows was paid for by the band itself, presumably to reduce the band's liability for any crimes that occurred during the show. So are fans pissed off that the band was behind the crack down, as some blogs have suggested?

Not that I can tell. I scoured various Phish blogs and message boards for longer than I care to admit, and couldn't find much discussion about the alleged double-crossing. I'd be interested in hearing from any Phish fans who do think this was a betrayal, but right now that doesn't appear to be a widely held sentiment.

This fan's take: I am sure Phish hired extra security, be it law enforcement or some other event security - and they should have. With this past weekend at the Hampton Coliseum being the bands first shows in 5 years, there was an overwhelming demand for tickets - and like me, most were shut out of going (unless I wanted to pay huge amounts of $$ to buy scalped tix). The fans of the band are rabid, to say the least and would still show up tickets in hand or not - hoping to score their "miracle" ticket. I am sure Phish hired this security as a precaution to overwhelming crowds, gate crashing, etc - not to solely to bust fans with grass or mushrooms. Maybe the hired guns took it upon themselves to wage a war on the usual low key, peaceful fans. There have been few instances (including the Red Rocks debacle of '95 in which spawned the band from being banned from Morrison for 10 years). My theory is Phish hired these guys to maintain a peaceful presence to ensure they would be able to play a venue they love again in the future. Whether or not these fans were busted with illegal drugs (lets save the marijuana debate for another time) is not the bands fault. I say the weekend went off without a hitch and great tunes were heard by the people inside the coliseum!

Just went to the Alpine show! People where throwing there extra tickets on the ground! No one wanted! Must have seen 50 tickets on the ground heading into the show.

Nah, this isn't a betrayal. It's just a bunch of young, dumb Phish-lot noobs getting busted with a buttload of OxyContin pills. I'll tell you what is betrayal though: Ticketing thru LiveNation -- getting tickets for Phish shows is straight-up ludicruous nowadays. I'm sure you'll find that on the message boards.
