"Common" Knowledge

In Section: General Posted By: GoonieForLife

We aren't allowed to use Wikipedia for any of the courses I'm taking as a source...Which is understandable- it being a University, and Wikipedia being a 'collaboratively written' online encylopedia. Despite my profs warnings, I've found myself at the site almost daily. I go to it to find random facts, little-known bits of information on historical events, and common knowledge (that I am ashamed to tell anyone- is not common knowledge for me). I can go on Wikipedia and find out just what the hell the political caucuses are- not wanting to admit to anyone of my peers that I haven't got a clue. Its also amazing to be able to learn about smaller seemingly insignificant things like the history of the paper-clip (which was invented in Norway and later became a national symbol). I don't care what my profs say, Wikipedia has become a staple to improving on my everyday 'common' knowledge.

As a UWM instructor, I can say that the problem with Wikipedia isn't, or shouldn't be, that it's collaboratively written. (Arguably, the ability of such sources to be corrected makes them more reliable than static information sources, which preserve error as well as fact.) The problem is that Wikipedia is, intentionally, a "secondary source": that is, it's designed to summarize or present others' research (Wikipedia guidelines prohibit original research). For academic writing, however, you're better off relying on primary sources (that is, original research). Wikipedia is very useful, then, to find those primary sources (if it's a well-written and thoroughly documented Wikipedia article).
