Friday night I was lucky enough to see one of
my childhood music heroes. Having been born to the 70s I came up thru the ranks
just in time for Stewart, Andy and Sting to hit me in my formative years. My
brothers would play their tapes and you could just tell from the first drumbeat
who it was. Sadly enough, I hadn't yet seen them when they decided to call it
quits.
Sadly enough I've made similar mistakes like
that as well. I was presented with the chance to see Stevie Ray Vaughn at
Alpine Valley and missed it because I had to work. When I came to work the next
Monday morning I found out that his helicopter had crashed and he and several
people had died. I wasn't going to make that mistake again if I could help it.
When news first hit about a possible reunion
tour I was awestruck. All three had gone onto do great solo work, but to return
to the Police was amazing. As I knew it would the initial tour sold in a
heartbeat and again I thought I was screwed, but then they made a second round
and I jumped on the opportunity. I wasn't going alone either. I snapped up a
ticket for my buddy TAG too.
Months of
waiting culminated Friday night at the amphitheater. Having never seen Elvis
Costello either I thoroughly enjoyed him and the Imposters too. Sting came out
and sang along for a song which really whipped the crowd into a frenzy.
When the lights went down once more it all came
to a head seeing those three on stage. They could've just played any of their
songs note for note, but instead they reworked them which added a new
dimension. I myself wanted to hear Driven to tears and Murder by Numbers. I was
able to hear the former, but not the latter. Still, here I was seeing the
Police, for probably my first and last time. I honestly can say it was like
being able to see the Beatles. That's a big one to throw out there, but I'm
doing it.
And to think it only took just over twenty years
to finally see them. Better late than never.
