Wiener dog races, Wisconsin, German Fest. The three go together like hot dogs, buns and mustard. Dachshunds originate from Germany and the name actually means “Badger Dog” in German. German “Badger Dogs” racing in the Badger state at a German festival is, well, a natural.
Dachshunds were originally bred to hunt, not race. Our small size and short legs made it easy for us to dig and chase animals out of their dens. But, for the record, the world’s fastest Dachshund was a dog-named Baron, who ran the 50-yard dash in 4.22 seconds. While there is no confirmable world’s record for humans, most records place the fastest run at about five seconds, so short legs or not, we can run, especially when there’s a sausage waiting for us at the finish line.
German Fest’s Wiener Dog Races will be held Saturday, July 26 at 3 p.m. There will be five racing heats according to the dogs’ ages, including puppies to one year; one- to three-year-olds, three to five years; six to eight years; and eight years and older. The final heat will include the winners from each race with the grand prizewinner receiving a one-year supply of Science Diet dog food. If you own a Doxie and would like to sign up for the race, here’s a link to download a registration form: http://www.germanfest.com/festinfo/dachshund.html. For the rest of you, come on down to German Fest and cheer us on. We’re a very friendly group and we love the attention.
Affectionately yours,
Frankie, 2007 Winner of the German Fest Wiener Dog Races
