I never met a pit bull I didn't like. In fact, to me, they're beautiful, intelligent, compassionate animals. However, they are considered an 'aggressive breed', along with Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, and even Chow Chows. Some communities are adopting 'breed bans' into their legislature, and Cudahy is now considering jumping on that bandwagon.
The Wisconsin Humane Society has alerted it's members of the potential ban. A meeting of city officials of Cudahy is taking place on May 14 to address this issue. The city may have been influenced by the town of Arpin, Wisconsin, which has just passed a ban on pit bulls. These actions can be devastating to shelters and dog rescues, as it makes it harder to find homes for these breeds. Overpopulation can eventually lead to euthanizing a dog that cannot be adopted.
Aggressive behaviors in dogs are often the result of being in the company of a hostile environment, and negligent handlers. Responsible owners, on the other hand, understand that training a dog of any breed is necessary for them to not pose threat to their communities.
Bottom line: These breeds should not be singled out; the ignorant handlers should. "How can we, as a society, justify euthanizing dogs on sight at shelters and calling for the destruction of dog breeds that make wonderful companions, when the real criminals walk free? What is wrong with this picture? (Krista Mifflin)
