Ryan's Plan is Laughable

Ray Bender, MD, Mequon

$2500 for an individual or $5000 per family for a year? This is laughable. $2500 is not much more than my wife and I pay per month for health insurance, not to mention the humungous deductible and copayment; and ours is considered decent insurance.

Protest Beef Subsidies

Marcus Armand, Milwaukee

Earlier this week, more than a hundred thousand South Koreans demonstrated against newly elected president Lee Myung-bak, as his entire cabinet offered to resign. At the root of this massive protest was not a declaration of war against North Korea, a boycott of the Chinese summer Olympics, or even escalating oil prices. It was a treaty allowing U.S. beef imports.

I agree with Mr. McNally that the government spits on vets

Bob Schweitzer

I have to comment on the audacity of Joel McNally to not believe how horrible it was to return from Vietnam. Flower/protest people were accepting of vets who joined their cause, that's about it..... maybe a little hyperbole there, but what we faced coming home is as bad as what you hear.

Preservation of the Milwaukee River

The 7th grade students at Tamarack Waldorf School

The 7th grade students at Tamarack Waldorf School read aloud in class your article about the Milwaukee river revitalization efforts. Learning about the Milwaukee River Work Group and the river corridor as Milwaukee’s “Central Park” helped prepare them to undertake a community service project May 20, in which they pulled garlic mustard and planted native trees.

Congress is the culprit!

Nancy Barker Brennan

Today, people are blaming the oil companies for high gas prices. We are awash in oil, but the U.S. Congress refuses to allow drilling in the huge tracts offshore and in Alaska. Congress is the culprit, not the oil companies!

Impeachable Offenses

Walter Wilson, Glendale

For over seven long years, the list of impeachable offenses in this Administration have nightly been on the news -- refusing to answer lawful subpoenas, politicizing the Justice Department, spying on Americans, rendition, torture and the creation of endless enemies, to name a few. Some suggest we just overlook it all because the end is near, and the media's distraction with candidate infighting is a perfect foil. But we may all realize our error too late when the last nail is driven into a Bill of Rights that no longer protects any American.

Eloquent Article on Hilary Hahn

Thallis Hoyt Drake, Milwaukee

My compliments to Steve Spice for the eloquent article on violinist Hilary Hahn. It is some of the finest writing I have had the privilege of reading in a newspaper ... as beautifully said as the music from Ms. Hahn's violin.

Oprah Goes Vegan

Max Dyer, Milwaukee

Oprah's stated reason: "How can you say you're trying to spiritually evolve, without even a thought about what happens to the animals whose lives are sacrificed in the name of gluttony?" As an added benefit, she expects to cleanse her body of the saturated fat, cholesterol, pesticides, antibiotics, and pathogens contained in animal products.

My take is that once again the Shep leads the way in publishing

W.S., Milwaukee

Specifically, the Time Warner ad on page 33 of the May 22 issue. The woman in the pinkish jacket who is flipping the bird to all the readers truly represents the finest in truth in advertising because it perfectly represents Time Warners' attitude about their customers/ customer service. Once again, thanks for having the courage to publish the truth even though some may perceive it to be less than acceptable.
