I agree with Mr. McNally that the government spits on vets

Bob Schweitzer

I have to comment on the audacity of Joel McNally to not believe how horrible it was to return from Vietnam. Flower/protest people were accepting of vets who joined their cause, that's about it..... maybe a little hyperbole there, but what we faced coming home is as bad as what you hear.

Preservation of the Milwaukee River

The 7th grade students at Tamarack Waldorf School

The 7th grade students at Tamarack Waldorf School read aloud in class your article about the Milwaukee river revitalization efforts. Learning about the Milwaukee River Work Group and the river corridor as Milwaukee’s “Central Park” helped prepare them to undertake a community service project May 20, in which they pulled garlic mustard and planted native trees.

Congress is the culprit!

Nancy Barker Brennan

Today, people are blaming the oil companies for high gas prices. We are awash in oil, but the U.S. Congress refuses to allow drilling in the huge tracts offshore and in Alaska. Congress is the culprit, not the oil companies!

Impeachable Offenses

Walter Wilson, Glendale

For over seven long years, the list of impeachable offenses in this Administration have nightly been on the news -- refusing to answer lawful subpoenas, politicizing the Justice Department, spying on Americans, rendition, torture and the creation of endless enemies, to name a few. Some suggest we just overlook it all because the end is near, and the media's distraction with candidate infighting is a perfect foil. But we may all realize our error too late when the last nail is driven into a Bill of Rights that no longer protects any American.

Eloquent Article on Hilary Hahn

Thallis Hoyt Drake, Milwaukee

My compliments to Steve Spice for the eloquent article on violinist Hilary Hahn. It is some of the finest writing I have had the privilege of reading in a newspaper ... as beautifully said as the music from Ms. Hahn's violin.

Oprah Goes Vegan

Max Dyer, Milwaukee

Oprah's stated reason: "How can you say you're trying to spiritually evolve, without even a thought about what happens to the animals whose lives are sacrificed in the name of gluttony?" As an added benefit, she expects to cleanse her body of the saturated fat, cholesterol, pesticides, antibiotics, and pathogens contained in animal products.

My take is that once again the Shep leads the way in publishing

W.S., Milwaukee

Specifically, the Time Warner ad on page 33 of the May 22 issue. The woman in the pinkish jacket who is flipping the bird to all the readers truly represents the finest in truth in advertising because it perfectly represents Time Warners' attitude about their customers/ customer service. Once again, thanks for having the courage to publish the truth even though some may perceive it to be less than acceptable.

Ice Cream Truck Noise Pollution

Rick Eells, Milwaukee

While I certainly agree something needs to be done about loud car stereos and motorcycles, I think that city hall forgot about two other noise polluters: car alarms and ice-cream trucks!

Impeachment is our responsibility

Ray Hallstrand, Milwaukee

Imagine if 9/11 had never happened. Would this President and Vice President have gotten away with such a weak case for war in direct opposition to the rest of the world? Would Americans have let our politicians bully and fire independent judges and a CIA agent, set themselves apart from laws with 700 signing statements, alter scientific reports on global warming or strong-arm Attorney General Ashcroft, deathly ill in a hospital, into signing questionable surveillance laws? Bush and Cheney would have been impeached many times over!

Illogic of the Shepherd Express Expresso

G.A. Lindstrum, Milwaukee

I'm as pro-choice as the next guy, but the illogic of the Shepherd Express'attempt to malign the anti-abortion pharmacist for refusing to dispense the birth control pill is alarming.

Torture is an impeachable offense

Kathleen Sommers, Milwaukee

Calling for Impeachment is our Constitutional right and totally American. The House called for impeachment of Bill Clinton because he lied about an affair.

Thug life is killing black America

Chris Napolitano, Playboy Editorial Director

“Playboy has an impeccable history in dealing with civil rights issues. We didn’t have any ulterior motives when deciding on a headline for Mr. Whitlock’s excellent story. Even though we used the working title “The Black KKK” in our assignment letter to Whitlock on February 7, I was not made aware of his displeasure until a month after we had gone to press....."

GAS TAX VOTE GIMMICK???

Colin J. N. Chauret, Colonel, USAF Retired

Regardless, whether we think $30 saved in Federal Tax Reduction between Memorial Day and Labor Day, this year, is a big deal or not, has anyone challenged Hillary Clinton and John McCain as how they plan to accomplish the tax break by MEMORIAL DAY?

Freeways benefit Milwaukee as well as the burbs

Todd Spangler, Milwaukee

As a long time reader of your publication, I'm well aware of the liberal slant of your stories, including your anti-freeway views. It would be nice if you realized that these roadways do not solely benefit the suburbs, but also serve Milwaukee as well.

Mary Laan, Milwaukee

Speculation of devious activities by this current administration has gone on for many years now and will continue to linger for many more. So many books have been written about Cheney's heavy-handed, manipulative and ultimately incompetent drive to war.

Multiple Inaccuracies in Milwaukee Magazine Story

An Open Letter to Bruce Murphy

By Matt Astbury
I’ll start at the beginning- with your title: “Film Festival in Danger?” At no point in your article do you maintain that the Film Festival is actually in danger of being suspended. And rightly so- there will absolutely be a 2008 Milwaukee International Film Festival, and 2009, 2010, 2011- you get the idea. You do a great disservice to the tens of thousands of Festival attendees when you suggest that the Festival will not take place. Milwaukee’s Future Foundation has not “shut off funding” of the Festival, and there will always be plenty of funding for such a great event- and one so important to Milwaukee’s stature as a city with offerings every bit as diverse as Chicago or Minneapolis.

Marcus Armand, Milwaukee

Earlier this week, the prestigious Pew Charitable Trusts and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health concluded that factory farming takes a big toll on human health and the environment, undermines rural economic stability, and fails to provide humane treatment of livestock. Capping a two-year study, with agriculture industry participation, the report calls for a national phase-out of all intensive confinement of farmed animals.

Supervisor Jursik an independent voice and balance to County Exe

Alexis Gassenhuber, Oak Creek

Expresso's 4/24/08 suggestion that Milwaukee County Supervisor Patricia Jursik might support the County Executive's "worst policy proposals" lacks any foundation, given her record. Supervisor Jursik has been an independent voice and a balance to the Executive.

Food prices driving people into poverty

Max Dyer, Milwaukee

It's been the leading story in major newspapers and TV news programs for the past week. More than 100 million people are being driven deeper into poverty by a "silent tsunami" of rising food prices, according to World Food Program Executive Director Josette Sheeran. A dozen countries have experienced food riots and strikes.

By blacking out impeachment from the halls of Congress and from the minds of the American populace, the leadership in Congress, with the cooperation of the news media, has betrayed America and our Constitution.

Thank you Good Samaritan

Ann, Rockford, Il

I would like to express my deep gratitude to the man from Milwaukee who took the time to stop and help change a tire on my Econoline. My son and I were traveling from Poynette down to Rockford after having performed a gig at the Mackenzie Environmental Center. While driving on the Interstate, we blew the back tire. The jack for the Econoline is very ill adapted to the vehicle. As we were forced to park on an incline in a middle stretch with very strong winds, we found it very difficult to keep the vehicle from falling off the jack when trying to mount the spare.
