The Brewers Postseason Rally

Today @ the Summerfest grounds - 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Nearly 26 years have passed since the last Brewers postseason. Many people, including a handful of the team roster, have never experienced the MLB playoffs in Milwaukee in their lifetime, so The Brewers have planned a major rally this evening to bridge the generational gap and to celebrate in the token Milwaukee festival style. The Brewers Postseason Rally will be held at the Summerfest Grounds from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the...

Robin Williams

Tonight @ the Milwaukee Theatre - 7:30 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Robin Williams has been responsible for some of the very best and some of the very worst comedy of the past 30 years, but his maniac, full-body stand-up performances are still a sight to behold. In the years since his record breaking 2002 tour, Williams has fallen on hard times, facing the death of his brother, a divorce and the recurrence...

Ron Sexsmith

Today @ Shank Hall - 8 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
The last several years have seen Canadian singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith, who plays an 8 p.m. show at Shank Hall tonight, push his well-worn folk-pop in some daring directions. For his 2005 album, Destination Unknown, Sexsmith returned to the stripped-down, all-acoustic setting for the first time since his 1980s debut. His latest album, Exit Strategy of the Soul, is perhaps his boldest yet. It pairs him with Cuban jazz musicians...

Gossamer

Today @ the Marcus Center - 1 p.m. & 3:20 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
First Stage's adaptation of Lois Lowry's Gossamer begins with a waif-like girl engaged in a battle of wills with her unyielding mentor, her unquenchable curiosity gently butting against her elder's limited reserve of patience. It's an appropriate beginning for a play that is essentially all about the battle of wills between the spirited...

Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

Today @ the Times Cinema - 1:30 p.m. & 4 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Though it takes the unusual step of acknowledging the infamous writer’s less than productive final years, like just about every study of its subject, Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, is guilty of over-romanticizing Thompson’s quirks. Still, the documentary is one of the most comprehensive looks at Thompson’s...

Contempt

Tonight @ the UWM Theatre - 7 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
One of Jean-Luc Godard’s most infamous commercial films, 1963’s Contempt follows a conflicted screenwriter as he attempts to perfect a script for a film version of The Odyssey—his job is made much more difficult by the meddling of just about everyone in his life, including his beautiful wife, played by Brigitte Bardot...

Mondo Lucha Wrestling/Variety Show

Tonight @ the Turner Hall Ballroom - 7 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
The promoters of the eccentric 7 p.m. Mondo Lucha Wrestling/Variety Show tonight at the Turner Hall Ballroom are wisely betting that Milwaukeeans won’t be able to resist its wry and lurid combination of irony, kitsch and breasts. At the top of tonight’s freak show is a Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling smackdown, complete with the requisite masks (and hopefully some semblance of cultural sensitivity), but there’s...

U2 Zoo

Tonight @ Shank Hall - 9 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Even those who normally have zero tolerance for cover bands have a soft spot for U2 Zoo, a local group that does a might impressive job recreating the experience of a U2 concert (it helps that their singer actually sounds like Bono). Tonight, the U2 cover group does a free 9 p.m. show at Shank Hall.
