Mudvayne

Tonight @ the Rave - 8 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Like pretty much every alt-metal band with an affinity for make-up, Mudvayne doesn’t get too much love from the critical establishment. They’ve never cracked the “50” threshold on Metacritic, and most recently Rolling Stone cut into their newest album, The New Game, chastising the group for “churning out poor-me songs that build from a whine to a godforsaken yowl.” But Mudvayne is a sharper, hookier metal band than critics credit them for, and if nothing else, they know how to treat their loyal followers, even letting fans pick the tracklist for 2007’s...

By Shepherd Express Staff
The city of Milwaukee has already plugged in its holiday lights display, but the Inter-Organizational Council of Bay View has a tree of its own, which it will light tonight at a 6:30 p.m. event at the Bay View Post, 2860 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. The night begins, awesomely, but a performance from dancers and their dogs, and culminates in a 7 p.m. tree lighting and performance from the Bay View High School Choir.

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition

Today @ the Milwaukee Public Museum

By Shepherd Express Staff
The Milwaukee Public Museum followed up its popular “Body Worlds” exhibition with another high-profile exhibit that has broken records at museums around the world, “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition.” This loaded exhibit tells the story of the iconic passenger ship that crossed paths with an iceberg on its maiden voyage, killing over 1,500 people from all walks of life. Pulled from the ship upon discovery of the wreckage in 1985, the artifacts...

Act/React

Today @ the Milwaukee Art Museum

By Shepherd Express Staff
The recent exhibit at Milwaukee Art Museum titled "Act/React" reveals the weightlessness that art engenders by erasing all memory of itself. Using interactive digital technology that springs to life through motion or touch, each of the pieces included in the exhibit not only illustrates the manner in which we engage with space but actually affects how we occupy it. It’s as engaging, engrossing and sometimes overwhelming an exhibit as the art museum has featured in a long time.

Broad Vocabulary Fundraiser

Today @ Broad Vocabulary - 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
When the Bay View feminist bookstore Broad Vocabulary announced that it was going out of business at the end of November, a small but dedicated group of volunteers rallied together to save the business, with hopes of turning it into a co-op. Though the store’s future is still unknown, they’re holding a fundraiser today at the store from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will feature belly dancing, adult open mics, kid’s story time, a sex-toy workshop (hopefully not at the same time as the kid’s story time) and generous sales on existing merchandise—40% off.

Mam3t Plays

Today @ the Boulevard Theatre - 2:30 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
The Boulevard Theatre continues its season with three early shorts by Chicago-born playwright David Mamet. Billed as Mam3t Plays, the program features brief works that focus on odd moments between three pairs of people. The opening short, for instance, Dark Pony, is a simple, straightforward work of drama, consisting of a story told from a father (Michael Weber) to a young daughter (Ericka Wade) on a car ride home. This afternoon’s production of Mam3t Plays is at 2:30 p.m.

The Producers

Today @ the Broadway Theater Center - 2 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Skylight Theater’s Artistic Director Bill Theisen and comic talent Brian Vaughn star in the title roles of the Mel Brooks/Thomas Meehanhit musical The Producers, which continues its run this afternoon with a 2 p.m. performance at the Broadway Theatre Center. Theisen plays the reprehensible yet lovable, down-on-his-luck theater producer Max Bialystock. During a conversation with his accountant, Leo Bloom (Vaughn), Bialystock realizes that one of his shows closed so quickly that he actually received more funding than he spent on it. With that in mind, the...

The Daly News

Today @ the Broadway Theater Center - 2 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
During World War II Milwaukeean Martin Daly had to go to great lengths to keep his four enlisted sons aware of what was happening back home. He toiled away on a manual typewriter, carbon sheets and some of the thinnest paper available, writing an exhaustive newsletter for his sons. He wrote some eight pages every week for three years, detailing life in Milwaukee and named the weekly bulletin The Daly News. The war eventually ended, but the newsletters remained. Decades later, copies of the collected Daly News passed into the possession of Martin's...

Yes

Tonight @ the Riverside Theater - 8 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Though this tour bills the band as Yes—often in screaming capital letters—the fine print tells you that the performers are technically “Steve Howe, Chris Squire and Alan White of Yes.” Yes has actually been on hiatus since 2004, choosing not to record after the bleak sales of 2001’s Magnification, their 17th solo album, and though a reunion tour was planned for the symphonic prog-rock band’s 40th anniversary this year, it was scrapped when frontman Alan White suffered an acute respiratory failure. Filling his place is—you really can’t make this...
