The Producers

Tonight @ the Broadway Theater Center - 7:30 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Skylight Theatre’s Artistic Director Bill Theisen and comic talent Brian Vaughn star in the title roles of the Mel Brooks/Thomas Meehanhit musical The Producers, which continues its run tonight with a 7:30 p.m. performance at the Broadway Theatre Center. Theisen plays the reprehensible yet lovable, down-on-his-luck theater producer Max Bialystock. During a conversation with his accountant, Leo Bloom (Vaughn), Bialystock realizes that one of his shows closed so quickly that he actually received more funding than he spent on it. With that in mind...

Snow

By Shepherd Express Staff
The Wild Space Dance Company celebrates the aesthetics of winter with its latest program, Snow, which runs through Saturday at the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre with nightly 8 p.m. performances. The company’s new choreography explores the impact of winter weather, from severe ice storms to blizzard white-outs, and guest choreographer Erin Dudley, on loan from New York City, will perform her new solo piece, “Sedna’s Betrayal,” a choreographed...

Juliana Hatfield

Tonight @ the Turner Hall Ballroom - 8 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Juliana Hatfield was one of the most enigmatic luminaries of the alt-rock boom of the early ’90s, a girlish singer with playful pop songs, a virginal demeanor and celebrity associations that the tabloids ate up. When she fell out of vogue at the end of the decade, though, her songwriting took a darker turn toward somber, more confessional terrain, an attitude shift that culminated in this year’s excellent How To Walk Away, an album that might not be the full-on comeback the songstress might have hoped for, but has returned her to her...

A Cudahy Caroler Christmas

Tonight @ the Marcus Center - 7:30 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
In Tandem Theatre opens its annual production of A Cudahy Caroler Christmas tonight with a 7:30 p.m. performance in the Marcus Center. This local traditional follows the eccentric cast of a once-popular caroling troupe that reunites for one last concert, milking plenty of humor from Milwaukee in-jokes (as well as the distinct accent of South Siders) along the way.

The Daly News

Tonight @ the Broadway Theatre Center - 7:30 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
During World War II Milwaukeean Martin Daly had to go to great lengths to keep his four enlisted sons aware of what was happening back home. He toiled away on a manual typewriter, carbon sheets and some of the thinnest paper available, writing an exhaustive newsletter for his sons. He wrote some eight pages every week for three years, detailing life in Milwaukee and named the weekly bulletin The Daly News. The war eventually ended, but the newsletters...

Eating Liberally

Tonight @ the Transfer Pizzaria Cafe - 6 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Milwaukee liberals believe in the “eat, drink and be merry” mantra, which is why in addition to their popular monthly Drinking Liberally gatherings they’ve started an Eating Liberally counterpart, which meets tonight at 6 p.m. at the Transfer Pizzeria Café, the hip new restaurant at 101 W. Mitchell St. with ample vegetarian offerings. Those with a progressive bend are invited to come talk politics over Italian cuisine, which Transfer offers for 20% off on Wednesdays to anyone who rides their bike or takes the bus to the restaurant.

Death Cab for Cutie

Tonight @ the Rave - 7 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Death Cab For Cutie’s 1998 studio debut, Something About Airplanes, conveniently reissued this fall for its 10th anniversary, introduced yet another charming little Pacific Northwest infinitely indebted to Built to Spill’s wobbly, heartsick guitar-pop. With its nasally cries, clumsy guitars and careening stabs of cello, the album seldom deviated from There’s Nothing Wrong With Love’s reliable playbook, but on future releases this once-modest little band would begin to distinguish themselves from their regional peers, crafting a tightly woven, achingly...

Jeremy Enigk

Tonight @ Shank Hall - 8 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Jeremy Enigk, who headlines an 8 p.m. show at Shank Hall tonight, was the shy, mysterious frontman for Sunny Day Real Estate, arguably the most important of the ’90s emo bands. That group’s tenure was a rocky one, and the group never found the success they seemed destined for, though years later an army of followers inspired by Enigk’s passionate, swooning vocals would conquer modern-rock radio. Enigk and two former band mates reunited as the Fire Theft in 2002, but for his solo albums Enigk strays substantially further from...
