99 Bottles

Saturday @ the Times Cinema - 7 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Though it’s difficult to consider a product as ubiquitous as beer an endangered resource, in their new documentary, 99 Bottles, a group of Milwaukee filmmakers argue that these are hard times for microbreweries, since ingredient shortages, stricter laws and numerous fees cut into the profits of small brewmasters. The Times Cinema screens the film, which compiles interviews with two dozen mostly local brewers, through Sunday, and each screening is packaged with a microbrew tasting session. Tonight’s screening is at 7 p.m.

Eurydice

Saturady @ the Marcus Center - 4 & 8 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
San Francisco-based director Jonathan Moscone teamed up with the Milwaukee Repertory Theater for the first time to stage Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice, a stylish, fresh look at the eternal dance of life, love and death. The play follows the title character as she travels beyond the veil of life following her untimely death on her wedding night. Eurydice was to be wed to Orpheus, the father of songs, who must now travel to the underworld to retrieve her. The production, which runs through Nov. 23 at the Marcus Center, continues its run tonight with performances...

Atlatl

Tonight @ the Cactus Club - 10 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
In little more than a year, Milwaukee’s young indie-rock band Atlatl has transformed itself from virtual unknowns to one of the city’s most likeable acts. Of course, they’ve had some help. Radio Milwaukee 88.9 all but adopted the band this summer, giving their day-dreamy single “Hey Man” the kind of airplay the station usually reserves for A Tribe Called Quest and Big Audio Dynamite. The song deserves the exposure: Sweet and effortlessly hooky, it evokes one of Modest Mouse’s long drives with nothing to think about. Atlatl will be changing its band name...

Carrie Rodriguez

Tonight @ the Pabst Theater - 8 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Fiddlin’ singer-songwriter Carrie Rodriguez, who returns to the Pabst Theater for an 8 p.m. show tonight, received a emphatic endorsement in the New York Times recently from roots hero Lucinda Williams, which was curious since Rodriguez’s twang-laden, chicken-fried songs bear no traces of Williams’ subtlety and depth. She’s playing behind her latest disc, She Ain’t Me, which finds her downplaying her signature fiddle a little bit in favor of richer (but still quite loud) arrangements.

The Gourds

Tonight @ Shank Hall - 8 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
The Gourds, the honk-tonk lovin’, old-school country revivin’ Austin group that scored a novelty hit with their ultra-twangy cover of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice,” bring their Texan charm, freewheeling musical influences and sometimes sophomoric sense of humor to Shank Hall for an 8 p.m. show tonight.

Widspread Panic

Tonight @ the Riverside Theater - 8 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Widespread Panic has been playing its swampy jam-rock since the mid-’80s, when there was no organized jam scene for them to lean on. The emergence of jam in the late-’90s as its own genre—with its own business model—turned the once-obscure band into a lucrative touring machine, and in recent years the band has had to alter its tours to account for its many sold-out shows. After doing a sold-out show at the Riverside Theater, for instance...

Every Time I Die

Tonight @ the Turner Hall Ballroom - 7 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
The foam-mouthed Buffalo metalcore band Every Time I Die is between labels right now, though at this point they’ve reached the point where they’re popular enough to release their next album—which they’ve hinted may arrive in 2009—without the support of a label. The band’s profile has rised steadily in recent years, as they’ve toured on bills like the Warped Tour and camoed in Guitar Hero. Tonight they do a 7 p.m. show at the Turner Hall Ballroom.

Danny Glover

Tonight @ the UWM Student Union - 7 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Though he’s best known as the amiable actor from films like Lethal Weapon and The Royal Tenenbaums, Danny Glover is also an aggressive, outspoken activist who supports labor causes, rallies for immigrant rights and has accused George W. Bush of racism in blunt terms that make Kanye West sound wishy-washy. Given Barack Obama’s historic victory this week, Glover should have plenty to chat about when he speaks tonight as part of UW-Milwaukee’s Distinguished...
