Avenged Sevenfold

Tonight @ the Rave - 7:30 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
After tasting commercial success with their 2005 major-label debut, City of Evil, which earned the group Best New Artist honors at the MTV Video Music Awards, Avenged Sevenfold stretched their pummeling metalcore into more user-friendly directions on their self-titled 2007 follow-up. To be sure, it’s not a total departure. The band still evokes an ultra-grimy Alice in Chains, cakes their music videos with ample fire and sings of biblical destruction. But this time out, they also nod to emo-pop, slow their choruses down to high-school prom tempos and even...

Greater Tuna

Tonight @ the Stackner Cabaret - 7:30 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
The Milwaukee Rep’s Stackner Cabaret takes a rare stab at a show that isn’t a musical with its production of Greater Tuna, a comic exploration of small-town southern life. The play follows the residents of the third smallest town in Texas through a series of sketches built around a community radio station. Impressively, all these characters are handled by just two quick-changing actors, Lee Ernst and Gerard Neugent, who steals the show with his brief appearance...

Down

Tonight @ the Rave - 8 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Pantera singer Phil Anselmo has been mostly silent in the years following the murder of his one-time Pantera bandmate “Dimebag” Darrell, but on the first major album he released since the death, he hints at some of the pain he felt following the death of his estranged friend. No, there’s not a new Pantera album that you missed; Anselmo recorded his latest songs with his gloomy, on-again, off-again supergroup, Down, with which he’s played sporadically since the ’90s. Tragedy aside, Down’s latest album, Down III, features some of Anselmo’s...

At Sea

Tonight @ the UWM Union Theatre - 7 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
The concept is so simple it’s almost amazing no other director has attempted it before. In Peter Hutton’s At Sea, the director documents the life of a massive container ship, from its beginnings in South Korea where shipbuilders complete the vessel, to its arrival in Bangladesh. The story is straightforward and, at a swift 60 minutes, utterly captivating. The UWM Union Theatre screens this 2007 silent film for free tonight as part of its “Experimental Tuesdays” series.

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition

Today @ the Milwaukee Public Museum

By Shepherd Express Staff
The Milwaukee Public Museum followed up its popular “Body Worlds” exhibition with another high-profile exhibit that has broken records at museums around the world, “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition.” This loaded exhibit tells the story of the iconic passenger ship that crossed paths with an iceberg on its maiden voyage, killing over 1,500 people from all walks of life. Pulled from the ship upon discovery of the wreckage in 1985, the artifacts in this exhibit tell the story of these victims, while painting a picture of life in the early 20th century.

Act/React

Today @ the Milwaukee Art Museum

By Shepherd Express Staff
The recent exhibit at Milwaukee Art Museum titled "Act/React" reveals the weightlessness that art engenders by erasing all memory of itself. Using interactive digital technology that springs to life through motion or touch, each of the pieces included in the exhibit not only illustrates the manner in which we engage with space but actually affects how we occupy it. It’s as engaging, engrossing and cutting-edge an exhibit as the art museum has featured in a long time.

Dial M For Murder

Tonight @ the Times Cinema - 7 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Based on a play and also paced like one, Dial M For Murder is perhaps the most talky of Alfred Hitchcock’s thrillers, a non-stop gabfest set almost entirely in one home. Hitchcock filmed it in 3D, making surprisingly scant use of the technology, save for one iconic scene where an attacked Grace Kelly reaches in defense for a pair of scissors, but what it lacks in thrills, it makes up for in wit—the dialogue is some of the snappiest Hitchcock ever filmed. The Times Cinema screens this classic in 3D tonight at 7 p.m.

Zac Brown Band

Tonight @ the Potawatomi Bingo Casino - 7 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
The Zac Brown Band’s latest single, “Chicken Fried,” tells you everything you need to know about this Atlanta group. Brown and his guys play greasy southern and country rock, albeit with a jammy streak that’s earned them dates with The Allman Brothers and on the Bonnaroo Music Festival. Tonight they bring their fiddles and guitars to the Potwatomi Bingo Casino for a 7 p.m. show.
