A former train station is an unusual location for a restaurant, but La Estacion (319 Williams St.) makes it work. The Mexican restaurant is located just south of Waukesha’s city center in the old Chicago and North Western depot, built in the days when Waukesha was a major resort renowned for its mineral springs.

A warm, milky cup of chai is relaxing any time of the year, but it’s especially comforting during the chilly endgame of winter. The chai served at Royal India is a mild pick-me-up for the midday, a gentler uplift than yet another round of coffee.

The twin clocks at George Webb have seen many diners, hash houses and hamburger joints come and go since 1948, when the first Webb’s opened in Downtown Milwaukee. Sixty years later, the nothing-fancy local chain nudges forward with the addition of fish to its burger-and-breakfast menu.

As the number of Thai and East Indian restaurants in Milwaukee continues to multiply profusely, Korean restaurants remain scarce. Oddly enough, there were more options for Korean food 20 years ago. In fact, our city only has one place 100% devoted to the food of Korea: Seoul Korean Restaurant.

Everybody likes a good deal at a restaurant, especially when the food proves as good as the prices. One of these rarities is located in the Riverwest area: Nessun Dorma, which opened more than five years ago in a former corner tavern.

When traveling in Southeast Asia a few years ago, I encountered a copy of the Bangkok Post with an extensive article lamenting the shortage of restaurants that make their own curry pastes. Most restaurants resort to commercial products because the process of making their own is so time consuming.

On my first visit to the Taste of Thai, I expected a similar version of the building’s former tenant, the Thai Hot Cafe. The former restaurant served food that was pre-made, a la Wong’s Wok, so the new setup proved to be a pleasant surprise.

Why argue with a classic? The Savoy Room (1962 N. Prospect Ave.) returned a while back to the ground floor of the Shorecrest Hotel. The elegant room with half-marbled walls, leaded glass and white linen has housed restaurants for decades, many of them Italian.

When chef/owner John Chitko opened Yaffa two years ago, he redefined the experience of Mediterranean dining in Milwaukee. The overall concept wasn’t new, but Yaffa made it different by focusing on Middle Eastern and Moroccan dishes, with a few touches from Europe.
