"Kansas back"

Kansas back
struggle to
what seemed
so flat and
that dull rage
growing up
grass becomes
so very
pretty edges
begin with
mirages dream
all sky
cemetery
wake wind and
shadows
mother she
is memory
memory
becomes her
a “beauty
of the earth”
solemnly
plain beneath
the sky a
place no
longer
occupied

Karl Gartung cofounded Woodland Pattern Book Center
with Anne Kingsbury and Karl Young, in 1980. "Kansas back"
is from Now That Memory Has Become So Important, MWPH,
Fairwater.
