David Barnett Gallery

Victorian art-house

By Aisha Motlani

Compared to the neighboring vestiges of high Victorian splendor the Button Mansion which houses the David Barnett Gallery is a model of stylistic restraint. Modestly screened by a cluster of tall trees, the only device that betrays the diverse horde of artwork contained within its mellow brick walls is a bright red John Baughman sculpture displayed on its front lawn. Once inside all restraint evaporates amidst the dizzying display of art crowding the walls, corners and curios on each floor. Aside from the work of contemporary artists like Ernesto Gutierrez, Xiao Ming, Carol Summers and David Barnett himself you'll find 19th century Jaipur miniatures, African masks and Golek puppets from Indonesia. Look closely and you'll also find woodcuts, lithographs, drawings and dry-point etchings by masters like Lautrec, Kandinsky, Gaugin and Chagall.
