Oaxacan Specialties

By Jeff Beutner
One of my favorite Mexican restaurants is the tiny Oaxaca Grill (3447 W. Forest Home Ave.). The interior is like a Northwoods log cabin decorated with colorful Mexican artifacts. The menu, made up of many Oaxacan dishes, started small but has grown over the years. Be sure to visit on weekends, when the Oaxacan tamales, which are wrapped in banana leaves, are available. The Grill is also the first local eatery I know that serves chapulines—toasted grasshoppers flavored with chile pepper—which are sold in markets and by street vendors everywhere in Oaxaca. They are actually quite good, with a texture like a Rice Krispie. The remainder of the menu is far tamer. The Oaxaca Grill has the best chile rellenos to be found locally, made with two whole poblano peppers filled with cheese and coated with a thin egg batter—simply the best.

My husband and I dine there regularly. The mole is very good and I also really like the picaditas.

I went today based on the article. I was told they only have grasshoppers in the summer months, which was fine with me (wasn't planning to order any). I was, however, disappointed that there were no tamales. They weren't on the menu and the server said they don't have them. She knew about the Shepherd article, even beat me to the quote "wrapped in banana leaves." Then shook her head "no, we don't have them." The place itself was really cute. Fun table cloths, small but nice bar, music fun but not too loud. We went Sunday for lunch and were the first ones there, but I could see how the place could be fun on a Friday or Saturday night. I had guacamole appetizer. It was made exactly as I love, avocado, tomato, onion and cilantro, lime juice. Unfortunately, it was salted with an extremely heavy hand and I could not eat more than 2 bites. My parents couldn't eat it either. The tortilla soup was very basic, but fine. Tomato base with tortilla chips in it, some cheese and a little avocado. My steak tacos on corn tortillas were greasy, but the meat was tasty. I'd say average. Overall, I would say it is probably a great place to party, but I'll head back to Cempazuchi instead for my next Mexican meal. The food is much better and the prices are better, and they have more to choose from on their menu.

Just went with friends yesterday. Wow, this place is great. Sorry I didn't try the Grasshoppers.
