Laborfest and Barack Obama

Today @ the Summerfest grounds - Noon

By Shepherd Express Staff
As always, the Milwaukee County Labor Council AFL-CIO goes all out in celebration of its favorite holiday, Labor Day, staging their parade through downtown Milwaukee at 11 a.m. and hosting a family-oriented gathering at the Summerfest grounds from noon to 5 p.m. With the election in full swing, there should be plenty of political chatter this year.  Last-minute addition Barack Obama is scheduled to close out the day with a 6 p.m. speech at the Marcus Amphitheater.

The feds are going on a deli-run of gigantic proportions using economic stimulus cash -- spending $28 million on ham and cheese alone, government documents reveal. This government spending is a hot issue among politicians recently, especially Republicans (though it's usually for not spending on what they want – but it isn't like Democrats aren't the same way) but it has hit a new low, with Clougherty Packing LLC. Clougherty Packing LLC is a meat packing company that prepares processed ham products, and they got just a shade over $5 million in stimulus money – that's some pork barrel spending, literally! That's some big unsecured loans for ham. Obama had pledged to fight earmarks and other wasteful spending, but it seems he's gone completely the other way. Unemployment is still rising, and lots of people could use payday loans – but Clougherty Packing LLC gets funding.

To ensure that taxpayers’ dollars from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) are recovered, President Barack Obama proposed today a new “financial crisis responsibility fee” on 50 of the nation’s largest financial firms. "My commitment is to recover every single dime the American people are owed," Obama said. "That's why I'm proposing a Financial Crisis Responsibility Fee to be imposed on major financial firms until the American people are fully compensated for the extraordinary assistance they provided to Wall Street.” The City of Milwaukee will receive $25 million and the Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity will receive $11 million in federal stimulus funds to help deal with foreclosed homes and rehabilitate neighborhoods. Today we can buy without unitedcashloans.
