Fake Democrats

By Joel McNally

A right-wing Republican from West Allis has been recruiting conservative candidates and promising them big money to challenge incumbent Milwaukee legislators in the Democratic primary. But former state Sen. Tom Reynolds, whose right-wing extremism is far beyond where the buses run, has not developed a sudden interest in Democratic politics or improving the lives of people living in the city.

Threateningly, Reynolds calls his front organization Clean Sweep Wisconsin, though he’s already suffered some losses in his attempt to sweep incumbent Democrats out of office. Last week, the Government Accountability Board removed from the ballot two of Reynolds’ candidates— Nicholas Cosey and Deon Price, who tried to challenge state Sen. Spencer Coggs and state Rep. Jason Fields, respectively—for failing to submit enough valid signatures on their nomination papers.

However, Clean Sweep succeeded in putting fake Democrats (none are members of the Democratic Party) in primary races against North Side incumbent state Reps. Annette Polly Williams, Barbara Toles and Leon Young. Clean Sweep is also running challengers against South Side state Rep. Christine Sinicki and West Allis state Rep. Tony Staskunas.

Smear Campaigns
Anyone has a right to run for public office in a democracy. No incumbent leg islator should ever be immune from challenge. In fact, election challenges help assure that elected representatives stay on top of concerns in their districts.

However, there’s nothing democratic about an outsider virulently opposed to the interests of people living in Milwaukee pouring anonymous money into the districts of elected representatives to smear them.

Even before the challengers filed their nomination papers—or failed to file valid signatures in two cases—districts were being flooded with expensive, full-color brochures attacking the incumbents. The brochures are virtually identical in each dis trict, with different names and photographs inserted. And they are chock-full of inflam matory charges, nonissues and half-truths.

The attacks are heavy on the hot-button “family values” issues right-wing Republicans have tried to use in past elec tions to inflame voters.

You may recall that when Reynolds was in office he was so extreme on such issues that he questioned unmarried potential employees about their virginity, participat ed in an anti-gay hate rally in Milwaukee and opposed abortion even in cases of rape and incest or to save the life of a mother.

Unless a Wisconsin legislator is appoint ed to the U.S. Supreme Court, his or her position on abortion is irrelevant. A woman’s right to choose is the law of the land. There’s nothing a legislator can or should do to violate the law.

The same goes for the issue of gay marriage, a horse so dead in this state it’s turn ing to dust. Gay marriage has long been illegal in Wisconsin. During the last gubernatorial race, in hopes of turning out a large conservative hate vote to defeat Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle, Republicans put an amendment on the ballot to make gay marriage unconstitutional as well.

So let’s see. Gay marriage is now both illegal and unconstitutional. How many other ways can we outlaw it? Maybe we could revive capital punishment and put to death any gay people who even think about it.

Many Democrats voted against the constitutional amendment either because it was unnecessary or because they correctly believed a constitution should guarantee rights, not take them away.

Clean Sweep smears any incumbent who voted against the constitutional amendment as an opponent of so-called “traditional marriage,” marriage for people who aren’t gay. When did any incumbent legislator ever vote to ban that?

Many other nonsensical interpretations of isolated votes are used to dishonestly paint incumbent legislators as anti-family. Did you know, for instance, that a vote against concealed carry was a vote against family values? Apparently, many families highly value the ability to pack deadly weapons and blow each other’s heads off.

Anyone who voted at any time against tax vouchers to send children to private schools also is dishonestly portrayed as an enemy of families. Unbelievably, Rep. Annette Polly Williams, the mother of school choice, is attacked in Clean Sweep lit erature as an opponent of her own program.

That is because Williams has opposed recent conservative efforts to expand vouch ers with the ultimate goal of raising income limits to require taxpayers to finance all pri vate school education instead of limiting the program to poor children.

Reynolds owns a printing business, but he’s not independently wealthy. Big money is being put behind the Clean Sweep candi dates, so one major question we should be asking: Where is that money coming from?

It’s difficult enough these days getting real Democrats to stand up for social justice, equal opportunity and the Constitution.Imagine how much worse it would be if right-wing Republicans succeeded in replacing all of the incumbents with fake Democrats.

Well I’m here to to say I I’m a democrate not because I paid dues but, becaues, my Mother and Father are Democrates. I inheritied that title. I was born into a Democrate family. I vote Democrate. I live in the poorest part of the city and just because I won’t the best for my community( I got to be fake.) Listen everyone that reads this. Out of all the democrates in milwaukee only 25 precent pay dues. So who’s keeping it real ( could it be the Real Democrates.) I don’t believe for one minute you have to pay some dues in order to rep. democrate or republican it’s your on free will as a human being. I feel sorry for our elder that made this statement becaues, they should have known better. I will always respect my elders NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY! Stop lieing to the democrates that we mush pay dues inorder to vote for Braack OBama, if our dues are not paid up! We would expect this comment to come from Marther Steward insted of Marther Love the powerful Chairman of the Democrate Party.

McNally's writing is basically plagiarized from a June article from Wisconsin Journal, and Journal Sentinal by Dan Bice. Are McNall and Keiser so unoriginal, that they cannot come up with some material of their own? His rants about 'fake Democrats' based on their 'views' on gay marriage, and abortion, is written under the assumptive language that all Democrats are for gay marriage, and all Democrats are for abortion. He fails to add Margaret Sanger's, C.C. Little's and Lothrop Stoddard's motivation on why they founded Planned Parenthood. Sanger referred to blacks as 'human weeds that needed to be eliminated'; and Stoddard published many writings about 'white purification'. He fails to mention that more black babies are aborted annually than the population of Milwaukee. And that a dismal less than 1% of those abortions are due to rape, and incest. Keiser, and McNally also failed to mention that over 80% of Planned Parenthoods are in urban communities; and that a black woman is four times likely to get an abortion than a white woman. Perhaps because this is their agenda, and feelings also towards blacks, and they are simply backing their 'boys' who support their own ideology, they are too cowardly to admit to out of fear of losing their jobs.
I totally agree! I'm Black, and a Democrat, and I also oppose gay marriage, and abortion. I did not know about Planned Parenthood, so I googled it, and saw that it was true. I also checked PPAWI's website, and they support the likes of Kessler, and Fields 100%. Try reporting this sometimes, McNally.

Joel McNally’s exposure of former Republican State Senator Tom Reynolds’ efforts to replace good, solid Democrats with wolves in donkey-hide is greatly appreciated. I would never deny anyone the right to run for public office. But, I strongly and vociferously object to this attempt by Reynolds to portray these individuals as Democrats in an attempt to hood-wink the voters. As Mr. McNally correctly stated, none of these candidates are dues paying members of the Democratic Party. Unfortunately, there is no legal requirement for someone to belong to the political party that they claim to represent as a candidate and potential office-holder. It should be noted that these upcoming legislative races are not the only instance with candidates who have had an epiphany of opportunity and have chosen to run as Democrats. The same thing has happened in the race for Milwaukee County Clerk. There are four candidates on the September 9th primary election ballot running as Democrats. There is no Republican candidate so the winner takes the prize. Of the four candidates only one has a long and strong record as an actual Democrat, Joe Czarnezki. Czarnezki served in both the State Assembly and State Senate as a Democrat. He has been a member of the Democratic Party since he was old enough to be eligible for membership. He was a leader of the College Democrats while a student at UWM. He has been a delegate to numerous State Democratic conventions and the Democratic National Convention. There is no question about his Democratic credentials. Joe Czarnezki is a true progressive Democrat. The same cannot be said of Czarnezki’s opponents. Candidate Carla Rice first joined the party after she decided that she would run for this office. Jim Schmitt and Suzette Emmer have never been members of the Democratic Party and are not to this day. I believe that the voters need to know that the only real Democrat in the race for Milwaukee County Clerk is Joe Czarnezki. Dawn M. Martin
If McNally and Keiser are such good journalist, why have they failed to mention in any of their articles, Jason Fields recent drunk driving conviction? I think you side ignorantly, 'Letters'! In fact, this was a recent conviction, I believe dating as recent as March 2008. Did you know that drunk drivers drive while intoxicated an average of 81 times before they are caught? This would have been a very interesting thing for McNally and Keiser to mention. Is this an ideal candidate? Forget fake democrats, they shouldv'e reported on individuals who should leave office, and enter a rehab clinic.
