Flight of the Conchords

Tonight @ the Riverside Theater - 8 p.m.

By Shepherd Express Staff
Jermaine Clement and Bret McKenzie’s job just got a whole lot harder. Until recently, the two were virtual unknowns depicting an unsuccessful band in HBO’s hilarious comedy series “Flight of the Conchords” (one of the channel’s few remaining commodities). With the show’s success, however, the pair now faces the acting challenge of being popular musicians playing unpopular ones. The little New Zealand comedy-music duo that could is even selling records like the pros: Last week, their self-titled album improbably debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard album charts, reportedly charting higher than any comedy album since Steve Martin’s late-’70s dominance. Flight of the Conchords have taken their act on the road, and tonight they play the Riverside Theater at 8 p.m.

We attended the Conchords concert at the Riverside (my first for this venue) and have to tell you we were very disappointed. Not at the concert itself, these guys are great, but at the venue and more specifically the crowd. The interruptions by the "waitresses" passing drinks and money back and forward in front of us DURING THE SHOW was somewhat of a distraction. Also quite annoying were the people around us that thought they were going to get the next Rolling Stone magazine cover shot with their CELL PHONE cameras. The shiny blue screens being held up the entire concert was a pain. Kudos go out to the Riverside staff in the yellow shirts who were proactive in speaking with people they caught doing this. But, I would have to say, the biggest annoyance was the insistence of “most” of the crowd to talk, yell out, whistle, and act generally obnoxious throughout the concert. This was a comedy-band routine, and being able to hear what they were saying and speaking was an important part of the show, and my main reason for attending. The behavior of the crowd made this difficult at best and almost impossible the rest of the time. So much in fact, that the Conchords themselves commented part way through the act and turned the microphone to the audience!!! Boy, that is something to be proud of Milwaukee…
I could not agree more. Jermaine and Bret were great, but we as a crowd sucked at helping to silence the hecklers. My dream is to one day attend a comedy event without the omnipresent douchebaggery.
