Chris Burton Jácome

Levanto

By David Luhrssen

Guitarist Chris Burton Jácome wanted to be the next Eddie Van Halen when he came of age in the ’80s—until a different muse whispered in his ear. The Mexican-American musician found another route to display his dexterity on the frets in the probable music of his distant ancestors, flamenco. Levanto represents the music he composed for a traveling show of flamenco dance and music, and is organized into moody, passionate movements that mimic the peaks and rests of opera. Jácome learned much about flamenco during a sojourn among Spanish Gypsies, yet his presentation is packaged as a contemporary aural experience and is designed to draw new ears to this ancient music.

Chris' guitar work is nimbly glides from atmospheric and dreamy to fiery and tempermental. The swirling vocals paired with the claps and stomps of the dancers make you feel as if you're onstage, watching and feeling the movements and can feel the breeze from the dancers' hands as they pass by you. Masterful, enthralling and deeply engaging.
